Getting married in Portugal

The application to marry in Portugal can be organised at this Consulate General of Portugal in Sydney.

On the declaration for marriage (link), the bride and groom must choose between civil, Catholic or Religious non-Catholic; indicate the date and place where they want to marry and the desired Nuptial Regime.

The Marriage certificate issued by this Consulate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

The process can only be initiated 6 months in advance or at least 1 month prior to the date chosen for the wedding celebration.

 

Documents required:

Please post the following documents to this Consulate General of Portugal in Sydney:

  • Declaration for marriage in Portugal (link) – bride and groom’s signatures must be recognized by Justice of Peace or Notary
  • Birth certificates of the bride and groom
  • Identification documents (passport or equivalent document)
  • Civil Status certificate (issued by the registry office) 
  • Ante Nuptial Agreement contract if it has been celebrated
  • "Money Order" to the “Consulate General of Portugal in Sydney" in AUD 206.70 * (marriage between two Portuguese citizens ) or AUD 236.10* (marriage between a Portuguese and a foreigner)
