Which are the countries of the Schengen Agreement?

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switerzeland and Sweden.

 

Do I need a visa? 

If you are an Australian or New Zealander citizen you are allowed to remain in the Schengen area for 90 days without a visa. 

On the other hand, if you are an Australian or New Zealander and are staying over 90 days in a Schengen state please read carefully all the information related to long stay visas. South African citizens and certain foreigners resident in R.S.A. require a visa to enter the Schengen territory.

If you  require a Schengen visa and live in Australia (with the exception of WA):

Applications must be submitted online and followed by an interview at the Consulate General of Portugal in Sydney. 

Submit your application at: http://www.secomunidades.pt/vistos/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=171&Itemid=14&lang=en and a date and time for an interview will be automatically provided. 

Please check the requirements section below for the required paperwork that you need to bring with you on the day of your interview. 

Fees for adults are currently AUD$88.20*, plus AUD$4.80* for postage for the returning of your passport. Please bring cash with you to pay for the Schengen visa fee as credit and debit card payments are not accepted at this Consulate.

Other Schengen visa requirements and important information:

  • If you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that country.
  • If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate that is your main destination (i.e. your longest stay).
  • If you intend to visit several countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your first point of entry.
  • Visa applicants are not advised to purchase flight tickets before all the requirements are fulfilled. The Embassies or Consulates of the Schengen countries are not responsible for any loss or penalties that might be incurred. 
  • Visas can only be accepted/processed once all required documents are received. 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR A SHORT STAY VISA FOR PORTUGAL

  • Apply online through http://www.secomunidades.pt/vistos 
  • Application form (completely filled in online), with 1 passport type photo
  • Valid Passport and return visa to Australia (validity must extend until at least 3 months after the end of planned journey
  • Copy of flight itinerary with confirmed reservation
  • Proof of sufficient means of support: e.g. bank statement, proof of income or photocopy of credit card
  • Copy of medical and travel insurance cover your stay in the Schengen States
  • Minor travelling by themselves or with only one custodian need to contact the respective Embassy or Consulate for further requirements
  • Letter from your company giving details about your business trip (when applicable)
  • An invitation and sponsorship declaration from your relatives/friends in Schengen country (when applicable)
  • Address where you will be staying in Portugal (phone numbers and email)
  • VISA COSTS: AUD$88,20*
  • PROCESSING TIME - UP TO 20 DAYS

Other Schengen visa requirements and important information:

  • Visa applications must be lodged at least 15 calendar days before the intended visit and cannot be lodged earlier than three months before the start of the intended visit
